DEXA Body Composition Scan

The gold standard in body composition testing. A 10-minute, non-invasive scan that precisely measures body fat percentage, lean muscle mass, bone density, and regional fat distribution. Stop guessing. Start knowing.

Gold Standard Body Composition Testing

The Lamkin Clinic in Edmond, Oklahoma offers GE Lunar DEXA body composition scanning, the gold standard in body composition testing. A single 10-minute, non-invasive scan precisely measures body fat percentage, lean muscle mass by region, bone mineral density, and visceral fat. This is the information that actually guides clinical decisions.

For patients in Edmond, Oklahoma City, and the surrounding area, weight loss without body composition data is guesswork. You could be losing muscle instead of fat. You could be gaining fat while maintaining total weight. You could be making progress that the scale completely obscures. DEXA removes the uncertainty and gives you a precise baseline and objective progress tracking that no other method can match.

What DEXA Measures

Total Body Fat Percentage

Precise measurement of fat mass as a percentage of total body weight, far more clinically meaningful than BMI.

Regional Body Fat

Fat distribution broken down by region including arms, legs, trunk, and android (abdominal) versus gynoid patterns.

Visceral Fat

The metabolically active fat surrounding internal organs. A primary driver of insulin resistance, inflammation, and cardiovascular disease.

Lean Muscle Mass

Total and regional lean tissue including skeletal muscle, measured by limb and trunk separately.

Bone Mineral Density

Bone density measurements that identify osteopenia or osteoporosis risk before fractures occur.

Fat-to-Muscle Ratio

The relationship between fat and lean tissue provides a more complete picture of metabolic health than any single measurement alone.

Why DEXA Matters Clinically

Medical Weight Loss Tracking

Confirms you are losing fat, not muscle. Protects metabolic rate during GLP-1 or caloric restriction protocols. See medical weight loss

Hormone Optimization

Tracks body composition changes during testosterone, estrogen, and growth hormone optimization protocols. Muscle gain and fat loss patterns validate treatment response. See hormone optimization

Cardiovascular Risk Assessment

Visceral fat is a stronger predictor of cardiovascular events than total body weight. DEXA quantifies this directly. See cardiovascular screening

Peptide and Body Composition Protocols

Tracks results from AOD-9604, CJC-1295/Ipamorelin, and other body composition peptides with objective data. See peptide therapy

Emsculpt NEO Results Tracking

Provides objective measurement of muscle gain and fat loss from Emsculpt NEO treatment, beyond what photos can show. See Emsculpt NEO

Athletic Performance Baseline

Establishes a precise body composition baseline for athletes and active individuals optimizing performance, recovery, and body composition.

What to Expect from Your DEXA Scan

01

Schedule and Arrive

Call us at (405) 285-4762 or request online. No fasting required. Wear comfortable, metal-free clothing. The entire appointment takes approximately 20 minutes including check-in.

02

The 10-Minute Scan

You lie fully clothed on the GE Lunar scan table while the device passes slowly over your body. There is no injection, no preparation, no discomfort. The low-dose X-ray exposure is minimal and comparable to the background radiation you receive on a short flight.

03

Your Three-Page Results Report

You receive a detailed, full-color three-page report covering your complete body composition breakdown. Regional fat and muscle maps, visceral fat measurement, bone density, and comparison to age and sex norms are all included. Staff will walk you through the highlights before you leave.

Available to Non-Patients

The Lamkin Clinic's GE Lunar DEXA scanner is available to community members who are not current patients. No obligation to enroll in any program. Call (405) 285-4762 to schedule and purchase your scan. You will receive a full three-page color report to take to your trainer, health coach, or physician. If you would like to discuss your results with Dr. Lamkin and explore a personalized health protocol, that option is available as well.

Frequently Asked Questions About DEXA Scanning

What does a DEXA body composition scan measure?

A DEXA scan measures total and regional body fat percentage, lean muscle mass, bone mineral density, and visceral fat. Results are broken down by body region including arms, legs, and trunk, providing a far more detailed picture than BMI or standard scale weight.

How is DEXA different from other body composition tests?

DEXA is the gold standard because it directly measures tissue density using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry rather than estimating composition through electrical impedance or skinfold measurements. It is the method used by research institutions, sports performance labs, and medical practices worldwide for its precision and reproducibility.

Is a DEXA scan safe?

Yes. The radiation exposure from a DEXA scan is extremely low, roughly equivalent to the background radiation you receive during a short flight. It is safe for most adults. Pregnant women should not receive DEXA scans.

Do I need to be a patient at The Lamkin Clinic to get a DEXA scan?

No. The Lamkin Clinic's DEXA scanner is available to community members in Edmond and the Oklahoma City area who are not current patients. You can schedule a scan with no obligation to enroll in any program. You will receive a full three-page color results report to take to your trainer, health coach, or physician.

How often should I get a DEXA scan?

For patients in active weight loss, hormone optimization, or body composition protocols, we typically recommend repeat scans every 8 to 12 weeks to track progress and adjust treatment. For general health monitoring, an annual scan provides a meaningful baseline and trend line over time.
